Dwain has 28 years of teaching experience, having served as a Professor of Ceramics at Eastern Illinois University and Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He holds an MFA from Arizona State University and a BA from the University of Wisconsin. His classes spanned beginner to advanced pottery, covering wheelthrown, coilbuilding, and pinch pottery techniques.
Born in South Bend, Indiana, Dwain grew up on a dairy farm and was inspired to pursue art after seeing a pottery wheel demonstration at age 13. He has been involved in ceramics for over 50 years, including running a successful production pottery business.
Dwain has led numerous workshops and served as Chairman of the Art Department at the University of Alaska, earning the College of Liberal Arts Faculty Merit Award in 1991. His work has been widely exhibited and recognized, including the Meritorious Achievement Award at the Kyoto Craft Competition in Japan. His pieces are held in collections at the Auckland Institute and Museum in New Zealand, the Kyoto Craft Center in Japan, and the Anchorage Historical and Fine Arts Museum in Alaska.
